CLODROPHOS
Clodronate Disodium Injection (60 mg/ml)

DID YOU KNOW?

A horse’s skeleton constantly remodels, changes, and adapts to everyday stress, which is why navicular syndrome is so common. Bisphosphonates like clodrophos (clodronate injection) act at the cellular level within the osteocyte to help manage the clinical signs associated with this process.

WHAT IS CLODROPHOS?

Clodrophos is an injectable bisphosphonate indicated for controlling the clinical signs of navicular syndrome in horses aged 4 years or older. It is the only bisphosphonate approved for intramuscular use in horses.

Your veterinarian will administer up to one vial of Clodrophos in two or three separate injection sites, including the neck, pectoral muscles, and/or gluteal muscles.

Owners are advised to observe their horse for at least two hours after treatment to monitor for signs of colic, agitation, and/or nervous system abnormalities. If a horse appears uncomfortable, the owner should be instructed to contact the veterinarian and walk the horse for at least 15 minutes until symptoms subside.

HOW TO ADMINISTER CLODROPHOS?

Administer via intramuscular injection. Divide the total volume of CLODROPHOS evenly into two (2) or three (3) separate injection sites.

  • Recommended dose: 1.8 mg of clodronate disodium per kg of body weight (30 ml per 100 kg of body weight), with a maximum volume of 900 mg (15 ml) per horse.
  • Clinical improvement is typically observed 2 months after treatment.

🔎 Additional recommendations:

  • Horses that do not maintain their response to CLODROPHOS but remain asymptomatic for 6 months may receive repeat injections at 3 to 6-month intervals to sustain improvement.
  • For horses that respond to the injection but show clinical signs before 6 months, re-administration should occur once clinical signs reappear.
  • WHY USE CLODROPHOS?
For the control of clinical signs of navicular syndrome to prolong a horse’s athletic career and improve its quality of life.

    ADDITIONAL BENEFITS OF CLODRONATE:

✔ Reduces the progression of arthritis.
✔ Effective for pain management in:

    • Back arthritis
    • Hock arthritis
    • Navicular syndrome
✔ Reduces bone inflammation and bone pain.

    CLODRONATE VS OTHER BISPHOSPHONATES:

Clodronate injection (Clodrophos) is the only bisphosphonate approved for intramuscular use. Other bisphosphonates, such as tiludronate acid or zoledronic acid, require slow intravenous administration, making application more difficult and often requiring multiple doses.

Clodronate injection is the only bisphosphonate proven to have an analgesic effect by acting on pain transmission pathways related to glutamate and/or adenosine triphosphate (ATP).
