Indicated in equines, canines and felines, in all infections of the respiratory, digestive, genitourinary and osteoarticular systems caused by Gram + and Gram – bacteria sensitive to amikacin.
Benefits
Similar action to gentamicin.
Amikacin resists aminoglycoside inactivating enzymes known to affect gentamicin, tobramycin, kanamycin.
Several gentamicin-resistant strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus, and Serratia are susceptible.
Description:
Broad spectrum antibiotic. Amikacin is a semi-synthetic aminoglycoside antibiotic derived from kanamycin.
Composition:
Each 100 ml contains:
Amikacin 21 g
Therapeutic Action:
The spectrum of action of Amikacin includes numerous Gram-aerobes and some Gram + aerobes.
Gram negative: Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Proteus species (indole-positive and indole-negative), Pseudomonas, Salmonella, Enterobacter, Serratia and Shigella.
Gram positive: penicillinase-producing and non-producing Staphylococcus species, including methicillin-resistant strains. However, amikacin is not very active against other gram positives: Streptococcus pyogenes, enterococci and Streptococcus pneumoniae (Diplococcus pneumoniae).
Amikacin resists degradation caused by most aminoglycoside inactivating enzymes known to affect gentamicin, tobramycin, kanamycin. Several gentamicin-resistant strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus, and Serratia are sensitive to amikacin.
Dosage and Administration:
Canines and Felines: 20 mg / Kg b.w. EV, IM or SC in a daily dose (around 0.1 ml / Kg b.w.). In young animals, elderly or with kidney problems, it is recommended to divide the dose into 4 applications every 8 hours and monitor the possible side effects.
Equines:
Young and adult horses: 6 mg / Kg b.w. EV or IM in a daily dose (about 3 ml / 100 Kg b.w.).
Neonatal foals: 20-25 mg / Kg b.w. in a daily dose (about 1-1.2 ml / 10 Kg b.w.).
Uterine infusions: 2000 mg (9.5 ml of the product) mixed with 200 ml of sterile saline solution (0.9% Na chloride), infused under aseptic conditions daily for 3 consecutive days.
Intra-articular administration: 125 mg (0.6 ml of product) daily.
