Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) has been found to possess a multitude of pharmacological properties for veterinary use, including anti-inflammatory, diuretic, anti-ischemic, and protective effects on vascular endothelium. Its primary attribute is its anti-inflammatory action, which is exerted through various mechanisms. DMSO stabilizes cell membranes in polymorphonuclear leukocytes and mast cells in connective tissue, leading to a reduction in the production of prostaglandins and thromboxanes responsible for the formation of inflammatory sites.
It promotes water depletion in the kidneys, thereby reducing edema of any origin. In cases of CNS edema, DMSO has proven more effective than furosemide and other diuretics. It protects vascular endothelium (due to the elimination of free radicals), reduces platelet aggregation, and prevents thrombus formation. DMSO has vasodilatory properties, making it suitable for cases of intestinal ischemia, such as obstructions or torsions.
INDICATIONS
Intended for use in sports horses. DMSO 100% is indicated in all cases where edema of any etiology occurs, particularly those related to the CNS, post-traumatic, cranial, and spinal cord. It is used for spinal cord compression and dorsolumbar myalgias of neurological origin, endotoxemia, laminitis, pneumonia, pleuritis, septic arthritis, neonatal meningitis, Eastern equine encephalomyelitis, and equine protozoal myeloencephalitis. It is also used for bronchitis or exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage in horses.
COMPOSITION
Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) sterile: 100%
WARNINGS AND SIDE EFFECTS
Do not use simultaneously with organophosphates or other cholinesterase inhibitors. Direct intravenous administration of undiluted DMSO 100 may cause hemolysis and hemoglobinuria in horses. Always administer slowly and in a 20% solution to minimize risk.
DMSO is considered a low-toxicity drug when used within therapeutic doses. It should not be given to horses under anesthesia or when acute renal or hepatic failure is suspected, nor to pregnant mares. Do not administer to animals intended for human consumption.
At low temperatures, DMSO 100 % may crystallize. In such cases, warm in a water bath to return it to liquid form.
ADMINISTRATION AND DOSAGE
DMSO 100% should be diluted in a 20% saline solution before injection. The 20% diluted solution of DMSO 100% is administered via slow intravenous, intra-articular, or epidural injection. It should not be given intramuscularly.
For diuretic-osmotic effects (e.g., CNS trauma), the dosage is 0.1 to 1 mL per kg of body weight daily, divided into two applications, always in a 20% solution.
For less severe conditions, such as bronchitis or pulmonary hemorrhage, 20 mL of DMSO 100 daily in one or two doses, in a 20% saline solution, is typically sufficient. In cases of endotoxemia, 0.1 to 0.5 mL of DMSO 100 (in a 20% solution) per kg of body weight daily, divided into two doses, should be applied. The duration of the treatment is recommended to be between 3 and 5 days, although this and the dosage should always be determined by the treating veterinarian.
