Chondroitin is a component of most vertebrate and invertebrate tissues and is mostly present in the connective tissues of the body, such as cartilage, ligaments, tendons and skin. In all osteoarthritis processes, chondroitin is decreased and its administration attenuates the inflammatory and degenerative joint processes at the chondral and synovial fluid levels. Chondroitin gives cartilage its mechanical and elastic properties and provides the tissue with greater resistance to compression and better cushioning capacity.
